April is Earth Month (centered around Earth Day on April 22nd), which is a big deal in the fashion industry. In two significant ways. I’ll get to that momentarily.
How do you celebrate Earth Month?
At Carry Courage, we celebrate Earth Month (and the sustainable fashion that complements it) with enthusiasm. That leads to the second way earth month is a big deal.
But what is the first way Earth Month and sustainable fashion go hand-in-hand?
The double F word: Fast Fashion
We talk about fast fashion a lot, and we will continue to, because it is a big deal.
Fast fashion is defined as,
“inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends.”
Spoiler alert: it is not a good thing. Pretty bad, actually. Check out this article where I go into the details about why it is so harmful to our planet.
That is reason #1, setting an ominous background why earth month is a big deal in the fashion industry: so much of the industry goes against everything this month means.
But I have some good news, which leads to reason #2 earth month is a big deal:
Because of the massive waste produced by the double F-word, the push back against fast fashion has been huge and impactful.
Thousands of fashion brands (including ours) have begun creating earth-friendly alternatives to quickly made clothes and accessories that clog our landfills.
Products that:
-
Are made from sustainable materials, like cork fabric, vegan leather, linen and GOTS-certified organic cotton
-
Last many times longer than fast fashion items
- Allow you to feel good about your purchase, knowing that you are being kind to the earth
Being a part of this movement is invigorating and feeds my sense of purpose as one who longs to leave our planet in better condition than we found it for our children and future generations.
How do you celebrate Earth Month? More on that below.
It is part of our company DNA at Carry Courage to create beautiful products that reduce waste and delight our customers.
That is why earth month, and earth day, are such a big deal - they give everyone a chance to celebrate and practice what we find essential 365/24/7 - valuing the planet.
In closing, here are some ideas for celebrating Earth Month/Day:
-
Take some dedicated time to step outside into a naturally beautiful area (a place with trees or water is great). Just sit and be, observing and listening to your surroundings for at least 10 minutes. If you can bear it, leave your phone stashed somewhere.
-
Pick up some trash off the ground as you are out and about and dispose of it properly
-
Recycle an eligible item or two that you might normally throw away
- Plant something
If you want to talk about the material I use in my products, or have any questions, I’m here for you! Send me a message and I’ll reply as soon as I can!
